The Sand Men
a novel by Howard Coale.
The novel is about two very different men: one an English captain in 1818 who – after years of service in the wars against Napoleon – trades in Chinese furniture, which he sells to Europe's nobility and burgeoning nouveau riche. The other is an aimless, soon-to-be-booted professor of the History of Technology at Columbia University in the present. The lives of these two are linked and changed by two very different women, and the discovery – two hundred years apart – of the same mysterious building.
